24 Hours of Rouen Marred by Tragic Accident - Mercury S3000 Powered Team Performance Declared Race Winner


(FOND DU LAC, Wis., May 5, 2010) - The 47th annual 24 Hours of Rouen endurance powerboat race began 4 p.m. Rouen, France time Saturday, May 1. A total of 50 boats representing three classes started the world's most grueling powerboat race on the river Seine. The race was running smoothly, with the normal attrition as time wore on to man and machine as they continued to race into the evening and the overnight hours. All of that changed at approximately 6:20 a.m. local time, Sunday, when one of the race boats struck one of the three safety patrol boats escorting a merchant ship running upriver. The impact killed one police officer, and wounded a second on board the patrol boat. Race officials immediately stopped the race with 14 hours completed.

Team Performance #6, a Mercury S3000 race outboard-powered DAC hull, was declared the race winner overall as well as the winner of Class 3 competition. Pilots Pab Galiléa, Denis Jarnigon, Tul Abbate and Owen Jelf completed 436 laps to win the 14-hour race. The low-emissions Mercury OptiMax 200XS SST race outboard-powered Navikart #32, a Moore hull piloted by Eric Doublet, Tony Bourdin and Franck Delambre, completed 420 laps for a first-place finish in Class 2 competition and an impressive second place overall. Mercury Racing S3000 race outboard-powered Tech Motor Racing #16 placed third overall and second in Class 3 competition with 396 laps completed. Racing Team Passio #3, a low-emissions Evinrude E-Tec S3000 race outboard-powered Molinari hull, completed 383 laps (37 laps behind the smaller, less powerful Mercury OptiMax 200XS SST powered Navikart #32) for a fourth place finish overall and third in Class 3 competition. Mercury S3000 race outboard-powered Team Neptune Inshore #14 placed fifth overall and fourth in Class 3 Competition with 377 laps completed.

OptiMax Rules Class 2
The low-emissions Mercury OptiMax 200XS SST race outboard, featuring a 2.5 Liter V-6 direct-fuel injected 2-stroke powerhead mounted on a 12" race center section and IV SSM race gearcase, placed 1-4 in the highly competitive Class 2 competition — formerly ruled by the purpose-built 2.0 Liter Mercury SST 120/S2000 race outboard. Team Marine Inshore #28, Team Dailly Inshore #36 and Team Neptune Inshore #34 finished 2-4 (6-8 overall) behind Class 2 winner Navikart #32, with 314, 313 and 303 laps completed, respectively. Mercury SST 120 race outboard-powered Team Privilege #21 rounded out the top 5 in Class 2 competition with 287 laps completed.
