Fairchild Wins Dow Bay City River Roar - OptiMax Powers Merleau to Formula Two Victory

(FOND DU LAC, Wis., June 30, 2010) - Chris Fairchild of Paw Paw, Ill., battled heavy rain and rough course conditions to win the 23rd annual Dow Bay City River Roar, Sunday, June 27, on the Saginaw River in Bay City, Mich. The race was round two of the 2010 Formula One P.R.O.P. Tour tunnel boat racing series.

Fairchild, starting sixth from the dock in a Mercury 2.5 Liter Champ race outboard-powered DAC tunnel boat, diced in and out of traffic to capture his first River Roar Formula One victory. It was Fairchild, after finishing second in the 2009 River Roar, who has provided the best description of the Saginaw River, "It's rough and ugly and tries to eat boats"

Shaun Torrente of Homestead, Fla., started on the pole and grabbed an early lead, with Tim Seebold of Osage Beach, Mo., in his mirrors. Seebold fell back as mechanical gremlins took over the performance of his craft. Torrente would eventually surrender the lead to Fairchild when he nearly rolled over in turn three. Greg Foster of Orange, Calif., came out of retirement — starting fifth off the dock in his Johnson race-outboard powered hull. Foster worked his way into fourth place twice, giving up the position once after spinning out in a corner, then losing the position for good when an engine trim cylinder failed - forcing him to the trailer.

Fairchild continued with a comfortable lead over 2nd place Torrente as he crossed the finish line of the 50-lap race. Terry Rinker of Tampa, Fla., finished third. Seebold and Jeff Shepherd, Woodlawn, Tenn., rounded out 4-5. All were powered by Mercury 2.5 Liter Champ race outboards.

Merleau Wins Formula Two
Jimmie Merleau of Fennville, Mich., driving his Mercury OptiMax 200XS SST race outboard powered hull, survived a first-lap collision with fellow OptiMax powered competitor Dan Orchard of Stratford, Ontario, Canada, to win the 30-lap Formula Two race. Merleau lead the race from start to finish.

Kris Shepard of Antioch, Ill., placed second in his Mercury SST-120 race outboard powered hull. An OptiMax 200XS SST race outboard powered Donny Lick of Hastings, Minn., to a third place finish. Terry Rinker and Mike Klepadlo of Gaylord, Mich., rounded out 4-5.
Round three of the 2010 Formula One P.R.O.P. Tour is Trenton, Mich., July 24-26.
